Guidance for optimal scar care

The healing process is complex and depends on numerous factors, including the type of lesion, the area affected and the individual characteristics of the skin. To promote optimal healing and properly manage the scar, following a targeted and personalised protocol is essential.

Kaloidon offers specific solutions for each stage of healing, with products formulated to moisturise, protect and improve the elasticity of scar tissue. In this section, you will find detailed protocols for the treatment of surgical and burn scars, hypertrophic scars or keloids, and     sun-exposed scars, with clear guidance on when to start treatment, how long to continue it, and how to correctly apply Kaloidon products for maximum benefit.

  • Preventive care for surgical scars- low-risk patients
  • Preventive care for surgical scars – high-risk patients
  • Photo-exposed scars
  • Hypertrophic scars and keloids
  • Burn scars

If not treated properly, surgical scars can develop into permanent and unsightly marks or, in some cases, even hypertrophic scars. To help prevent this from happening and promote optimal healing, it is always essential to contact your doctor and adopt a personalised protocol based on the type of scar and the level of risk.

Preventive care for surgical scars

Low-risk patients

Example: no genetic predisposition, fair skin, non-smoker + localised scar on arms, legs and lower body area

To prevent hypertrophic or unsightly scars following surgery, it is recommended to use Kaloidon Gel.

  • When to start: after removal of the stitches or complete reabsorption of the internal stitches.
  • Duration of treatment: minimum 3 months, up to 6 months or more, according to the doctor’s instructions.
  • How to use: apply the gel at least twice a day, massaging the scar gently during each application.

Benefits of Kaloidon Gel

Quercetin-rich onion extract helps regulate inflammation levels and the subsequent collagen proliferation, while pullulan and hyaluronic acid keep the scar hydrated, soft, and pliable. The texture of Kaloidon Gel is ideal for scar massage, which is important for promoting healthy blood flow and preventing adhesions to underlying tissues that could cause functional limitations.

High-risk patients

Example: genetic predisposition, fair skin, smoking, previous hypertrophic scars + scar located in the upper body (chest, neck)

Those with risk factors such as darker skin, genetic predisposition, smoking habit or a history of hypertrophic scars require more intensive treatment to prevent complications. In these cases, we recommend using Kaloidon Patch followed by Kaloidon Gel to ensure greater protection and targeted treatment.

  • When to start: after removing the stitches or following their complete reabsorption.
  • Duration of treatment: 4 weeks with Kaloidon Patch, followed by 3-6 months with Kaloidon Gel, according to medical advice.
  • Directions for use:
    • Kaloidon Patch: Apply one patch per day for at least 12 consecutive hours for one month.
    • Kaloidon Gel: After one month of treatment with Kaloidon Patch, apply twice daily with appropriate massage.

Benefits of combined treatment

Kaloidon Patch provides gentle compression that regulates collagen production and improves hydration. Kaloidon Gel completes the treatment by keeping the scar soft and flexible, reducing the risk of adhesions and improving the overall appearance of the scar.

Protocol of use for photo-exposed scars

Scars in visible, frequently sun-exposed areas require additional protection to prevent hyperpigmentation and minimise UV-induced damage. Kaloidon TiO2, with its advanced formulation, is designed for this purpose.

  • When to start: after removing the stitches or following their complete reabsorption.
  • Duration of treatment: minimum three months, up to six months or more.
  • How to use: Apply Kaloidon TiO2 before each exposure to the sun, reapplying after intense physical activity, sweating or bathing in water.

Benefits of Kaloidon TiO2

Thanks to the presence of physical UV filters, such as titanium dioxide, Kaloidon TiO2 offers SPF 50+ protection against UVA and UVB rays. Its formulation prevents hyperpigmentation and reduces inflammation, while the silicone elastomer helps keep scar tissue hydrated and pliable.

Treatment protocol for hypertrophic scars or keloids

Hypertrophic scars and keloids require timely and targeted treatment to reduce scar tissue thickness and improve elasticity. The combination of Kaloidon Patch and Kaloidon Gel offers an effective solution.

  • When to start: Treatment should be started as soon as possible, as soon as it becomes clear that the scar is not healing properly
  • Duration of treatment: 8-12 weeks with Kaloidon Patch, followed by 6 months of Kaloidon Gel.
  • Directions for use:
    • Kaloidon Patch: Apply one patch per day for at least 12 consecutive hours for one month.
    • Kaloidon Gel: continue with two applications a day, performing a thorough massage on the scar.

Benefits of the treatment

Kaloidon Patch reduces thickening and improves tissue softness. Kaloidon Gel regulates collagen production, maintains hydration, and helps      prevent adhesion to underlying tissues, thanks to the massage it enables.

Treatment protocol for burns

Burn scars need specific treatment to improve tissue mobility and reduce permanent signs. Kaloidon Gel is indicated for use on fully re-epithelialised burns.

  • When to start: Start only once the area has fully healed and the skin is intact
  • Duration of treatment: minimum three months, up to six months or more.
  • How to use: apply twice a day, gently massaging.

Benefits of Kaloidon Gel

Onion extract regulates collagen production, while pullulan and hyaluronic acid maintain hydration and help keep scar tissue supple and flexible.

Guide to scar massage

Scar massage is an essential practice to promote optimal healing, as it helps improve the aesthetic appearance of the scar and tissue elasticity and mobility. This approach not only reduces adhesions between the scar and underlying tissues but also helps prevent stiffness, thickening, and other problems associated with cicatrisation.

When to start the massage

Massage can begin once the wound is completely closed, and scabs have fallen off, generally about two weeks after surgery or trauma. It is always essential that the skin is intact and without signs of active inflammation or infection.

For optimal results, it is recommended to perform the massage daily for at least three months. Each session should last 5-10 minutes and occur once or twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening.

The effectiveness of scar massage depends on the use of correct techniques, aimed at stimulating blood circulation, improving skin mobility and preventing adhesions:

  • Circular movements: Perform gentle, circular finger movements to warm up tissues and stimulate blood flow in the scar area.
  • Longitudinal movements: massage along the perimeter of the scar, following its length, to promote tissue mobility.
  •      Transverse movements: perform movements perpendicular (zig-zag) to the scar to loosen adhesions and further improve the flexibility of the scar tissue.

To enhance the benefits of massage, it is advisable to use Kaloidon Gel. Thanks to its advanced formulation, the gel helps moisturise the skin, soothe itching and redness, and improve the scar tissue’s elasticity. Applying the gel before the massage helps the fingers glide more easily over the skin, making the treatment more comfortable and effective.

A regular and well-performed scar massage provides several long-term benefits:

  • Reduces the risk of scar thickening and adhesions.
  • Improves the texture of the skin and makes it more even.
  • Prevents functional problems, such as stiffness or movement limitations, especially in scars over joints or in areas subject to tension.
  • It also improves overall comfort, making the scar less bothersome and more integrated with the surrounding tissues.

In addition to being a functional practice, scar massage should be understood as a daily      act of care that, with the support of specific products such as Kaloidon gel, can enhance the healing process, significantly improving both aesthetic and functional results.

Kaloidon gel helps to:

  • Deeply moisturise the scar
  • Soothe and help reduce inflammation in the scar, thanks to the presence of its functionally active ingredients
  • Make the massage more comfortable

Being consistent with the scar massage is essential for visible and long-lasting results. For this reason, it is important to do it twice a day, every day, for at least three months.

Listen to your body: massage should never be painful. Then, carry out each step gently, without causing significant pain sensation.
