Post-operative scars: what to expect and how to improve their appearance

Surgical scars are an inevitable consequence of any surgery that requires an incision. Stitches help bring the edges of the skin closer together, promoting optimal healing and, ideally, leaving a thin, barely visible scar.

The healing process

In the first few days, it is normal to notice slight redness around the wound, signalling an inflammatory response. Over time, the area should flare up, gradually returning to the skin’s natural colour. Healing then follows the phases of proliferation and remodelling, which help define the scar’s final appearance.

Factors affecting the appearance of surgical scars

The outcome of a post-operative scar depends on several elements, including:

  • Location of the incision | Some areas of the body, such as those under greater tension (sternum and upper body in general) or movement, can affect the final appearance of the scar.
  • Incision size | Larger or deeper cuts, necessary for complex surgical procedures, tend to leave more visible scars.
  • Type of surgery | Procedures involving the removal of large amounts of tissue or large dissections can result in more prominent scars.
  • Patient habits | Smoking, inadequate diet, or lack of physical activity can affect the healing process.
  • Scar care | Rigorous cleansing and antiseptic dressings in the early stages of post-surgery tissue repair, skin hydration, the use of specific creams and regular massage can greatly improve the appearance of the scar over time.
